Origins
Toto's early history which began in 1917, mirrored Japan's rapid economic expansion. In the first half, Toto produced products to meet the demands for modern, brand new urban housing. It used the first tunnel kiln in the nation that could produce ceramics continuously. It also pioneered the use of automation for production control, which allows for greater efficiency and consistency.
The company began expanding overseas in the latter part of the 1980s to benefit from new markets and sales opportunities. The company created the Cera Trading Company to import and sell other products of other manufacturers in order to complement its own line of sanitary earthenwares and plumbing fittings. This strategy increased sales and increased the company's global market share.
By the 1990s, Toto had shifted its focus to research and development of household appliances that use water. It also upgraded its distribution system to better meet the needs of its customers and increase profits. The company also employed the just-in time approach in its supply chain management as well as sales program. This resulted in a higher level of customer satisfaction.
Toto continued to develop toilet technology. The latest toilet, for example, has a powerful tornado flush that is more eco friendly than conventional toilets. The company makes use of recycled water in its manufacturing process, and has a green purchasing policy. In addition to toilets, Toto manufactures faucets and bathtubs and hand dryers that are more energy efficient than typical models.
The first Toto museum opened in the year 2015. It hosts exhibits on the most iconic products of Toto, their evolution, the group companies (all of which are made from ceramics) as well as the history of plumbing and products such as bath units. In a separate gallery you can see Toto products that are sold throughout. The museum even has a bathroom that features a WASHLET toilet and other toilet-related innovations.
Before the formation of Toto the band, members of the group performed session work for various musicians. Keyboardist David Paich, drummer Jeff Porcaro and guitarists Mike Porcaro and Steve Lukather all played on the album Silk Degrees by Boz Scaggs. They also played on records by Steely Dan, Seals and Crofts, and Sonny and Cher.
Discography
It is common for a group with a name such as Asia to be a prog rock group, but it is actually a relatively straightforward rock band. Although the band have a diverse musical background, their biggest success was achieved in 1982 with Toto IV.

The album begins hard with songs such as Running Out of Time or Unknown Soldier that show the band's ability to create great AOR tunes that slowly get into your head. The album also features more jazzy, slower tracks such as The Little Things and Chinatown. And the album ends with Great Expectations, a song that combines folk with distortion AOR and could sound like a complete flop, but works wonderfully well.
After Toto IV the band's fortunes began to decline. David Hungate left to concentrate on his solo career and the band was through various drummers. In 1984, Bobby Kimball was fired from the band in the wake of drug charges and the group continued to perform as a trio, which included Michael Porcaro and Steve Lukather.
Toto released Isolation despite the turmoil. It was not as popular as IV. However, the band had a successful chart-topping album in 1992 with Kingdom of Desire. This album marked the conclusion of the original Toto lineup and was also the first album featuring a new singer, Simon Phillips.
